As you can see, within XML sitemap of WordPress Money Online there are several ‘index’ XML sitemaps:

…/post-sitemap.xml

…/page-sitemap.xml

…/author-sitemap.xml

You may wonder why there are so many registers. The purpose is to make the site structure as clear as possible. You can see  also that at the end of each line tells Google when the corresponding field or register was last updated. With that you tell Google to crawl and index again the content when its date within the XML sitemap changes. This is a good SEO move.

Need to know that each XML sitemap can host up to 50.000 URLs, so if you have more posts within your website you must split your index sitemap into two pieces. Note: Yoast has set this limit to 1000 URLs to keep the XML sitemap loading fast. Bravo Yoast.

Does everyone need an XML sitemap? Who need them?

Google says : “XML sitemaps are beneficial for really large websites” and also “for new websites with few external links to it”, the famous backlinks, or lastly for “websites which use rich media content”.

But we strongly recommend that everyone should create an XML sitemap for his/her website. Why? Just to inform Google about your most important and also lastly updated pages and posts.

Which pages should I add in my XML sitemap?

Relevancy is the key. If you think of avisitor landing on a specific page or URL is not a good result and you do not want them to, so do not add that URL in your XML sitemap. That way Google will index this URL anyway because there are links which follow that specific URL. Avoid indexing it by adding the “noindex, follow” tag.

Example1: a Starting blog

To make sure your target group will find your new blog or website you want Google to find your URLs fast. Right? So, it’s a good idea to create an XML sitemap YESTERDAY or ASAP

At the start you should avoid adding tag’s URLs to your XML sitemap because of your poor (few posts we mean, not its bad quality since we know everything is about Content) content.

Example2: media & images

Long story short : “media and images” do not need a sitemap since they are already included in “post” and “page” sitemap. Adding those kind of XML sitemaps would be redundant. So DO NOT except for the case you run a photography business or a video editing company presenting your high quality projects.
